NYS Homeschool Annual Assessments

New York State requires an annual assessment to document your child's academic progress. Depending on your child's grade level, the assessment may be a standardized achievement test or a written narrative evaluation.

Annual Assessments Required By Grade

The type of annual assessment you may use depends on your child's grade level.

Grades 1-3

Grades 4-8

Grades 9-12

A written narrative evaluation may be used instead of a standardized achievement test.

A written narrative evaluation may be used every other year. A standardized achievement test is required during the alternate years.

A standardized achievement test is required each year.

Parent Administration

Families may choose from standardized achievement tests permitted under NYS home instruction regulations. Testing arrangements and who may administer the test can vary depending on the test and where it is administered.

When permitted for your child's grade level, a written narrative may be prepared by a New York State certified teacher, a home instruction peer review panel, or another person with the superintendent's consent.

A parent may administer a standardized test or prepare a written narrative evaluation with the consent of the superintendent.
