Navigating NYS Homeschool Requirements
Getting Started
Homeschooling in New York begins by notifying your local school district of your intent to homeschool. The district will then provide information about the homeschooling regulations and an IHIP form for you to complete.
Throughout the school year, parents are responsible for maintaining attendance records, submitting quarterly reports, and completing an annual assessment. Understanding these steps from the beginning can make the process much easier to manage. Parents do not need a teaching degree, high school diploma, or GED to homeschool their children in New York State.

Annual Assessment
Notify your school district of your intent to homeschool each school year. You will also submit an Individualized Home Instruction Plan (IHIP) outlining the curriculum materials or plan of instruction you will use for the required subjects.
Submit quarterly reports throughout the school year documenting instructional hours, material covered in each subject, and your child's progress.
At the end of the school year, an annual assessment is required to evaluate your child's academic progress. Depending on your child's grade level, this may be a standardized achievement test or a written narrative evaluation.
Required Subjects by Grade
New York State requires specific subjects to be taught at different grade levels. Here's a quick overview of the requirements for grades 1–6, 7–8, and 9–12.

Covers foundational reading, writing, spelling, mathematics, geography, U.S. history, science, health education, physical education, music, and visual arts.
Includes English, history and geography, science, mathematics, physical education, health, art, music, practical arts, and library skills.
Requires cumulative high school units in English, social studies, mathematics, science, health, physical education, art or music, and electives.
